FAQ

1. What is a Triple Duty Valve and what does it do?

A Triple Duty Valve is a precision-engineered valve designed for installation on the discharge side of a hydronic pump (heating or cooling systems). It combines three separate valve functions into one body :

  • Check Valve: It acts as a non-slam check valve to prevent reverse flow (backflow) and water hammer when the pump shuts off .

  • Balancing Valve: It allows the system to be balanced by adjusting the flow rate to the design specifications .

  • Shut-Off Valve: It provides positive drip-tight isolation to allow for pump maintenance .

2. Where should the valve be installed?

The valve must be installed on the discharge side of the system or zone pump. The arrow on the valve body must point in the direction of the flow . To ensure accurate flow measurement and quiet operation, a minimum length of straight, unrestricted pipe is required upstream and downstream of the valve . Some manufacturers also recommend not mounting the valve directly to the pump flange to avoid noise issues .

3. Can the valve be installed in any orientation?

No. To ensure proper seating of the internal disc and prevent valve slam (noise), the valve stem must be pointed up. Installation with the stem pointing downward or horizontally is not recommended .

4. What are the maximum operating temperature and pressure?

This depends slightly on the specific model and connection type, but for standard NPT threaded Bell & Gossett models:

  • Maximum Working Pressure: 200 PSI (1379 kPa) .

  • Maximum Operating Temperature: 250°F (121°C) .

  • Note: Flanged or grooved connections may have different pressure ratings (e.g., 175 psig for flanged) .

5. How do I use the valve to measure flow (balance the system)?

To balance the system:

  1. Open the valve fully, then energize the pump .

  2. Connect a differential pressure readout kit (using readout probes) to the P/T ports (pressure/temperature ports) on the valve .

  3. Read the differential pressure (ΔP) across the valve.

  4. Refer to the manufacturer's Performance Curve or Cv rating table (usually printed on the valve nameplate or in the manual) to determine the flow rate (GPM) based on the pressure drop and the percentage the valve is open .

  5. Adjust the valve stem position and repeat until the desired flow rate is achieved .

6. What is the "Memory Stop" or "Memory Button" for?

The memory stop is a feature that allows you to return the valve to its precise balanced position after it has been closed for maintenance. Once the correct balance point is set, you loosen the screw and slide the stop against the handle. When you reopen the valve, it stops at that exact position .

7. What is the recommended pressure drop across the valve?

When using the valve for throttling (balancing), it is generally recommended not to exceed 25 feet of pressure drop across the valve. Exceeding this limit can cause noise (cavitation) and potential damage to the valve internals .

8. What should I do if the valve is leaking from the stem (packing nut)?

If the valve is leaking at the packing nut (the nut where the stem enters the bonnet), you can attempt to stop the leak by tightening the packing nut clockwise. WARNING: Use caution if the system is hot.

  • If tightening does not stop the leak, you may need to replace the "O" ring or packing. Some models (like the B&G 3DV) allow for packing replacement while the valve is under full system pressure, though this should only be done following the specific safety instructions in the manual .

9. Can Triple Duty Valves be used for potable (drinking) water?

Generally, no. Manufacturers like Bell & Gossett specifically state in their manuals that the standard 3DV Triple Duty Valve is not recommended for potable water systems . They are designed for closed-loop hydronic heating and cooling systems.

10. What is the advantage of using a Triple Duty Valve versus individual valves?

The primary advantages are space savings and lower initial installation costs. By combining three valves into one unit, it requires less piping space in mechanical rooms and reduces the labor time for installation compared to installing a separate shut-off valve, check valve, and balance valve
